LEADERSHIP WISDOM – CQ – Collective & Cultural Quotient: Drive Cognitive Diversity

Mark Urban is a distinguished British journalist, historian and broadcaster

(Podcast 370); renowned for his fearless commitment to truth and his deep

knowledge of defence, foreign affairs and military history. From the mo-

ment he stepped into the newsroom, he stood out. As a founding Defence

Correspondent for The Independent and later as Diplomatic Editor for

almost three decades on BBC’s Newsnight, he built a reputation for incisive

intelligence and fearless enquiry.

His military background shaped him. It gave him discipline, precision, and

a clear-eyed commitment to integrity; values he carried into every aspect

of his journalism.

Mark became known for challenging authority and exposing lies. His

investigative work tackled some highly sensitive subjects. During his time

at Newsnight, Mark was celebrated for incisive questioning and his refusal

to accept cover-ups or misinformation. He led by example – guiding his

team to dig deeper and ask the questions others avoided. Reflecting on his

approach, Mark said:

“You have to look at the facts and challenge the lies, no matter who

is telling them. Journalism, like leadership, is about holding power

to account and making sure the truth comes out, even when it’s

uncomfortable or inconvenient.”
