Top Tip Details
Major General Lamont Kirkland CBE – Chief Executive Officer.
Lamont’s passion is enabling others to experience the spirit of adventure and the power of sport. Before founding Team Forces he served in the Army for 37 years where he finished his military career as GOC of the Army’s 4th Division. An active sportsman, he represented the Army & Hampshire in rugby and athletics and was Chairman of Army Rugby, Army Winter Sports and the President of Army Boxing. Seeing firsthand the need for funding at all levels of military sport he created an organisation to help solve the problem. The demand for assistance has since broadened and increased and after twelve amazingly successful years of operation Team Forces now helps thousands across the military community.
Team Forces raises funds in order to improve the lived experience for the armed forces community through the power of sport, challenge and adventure. Their initiatives improve health, wellbeing and recovery by promoting excellence, equality and inclusion. These activities are critical to the moral, motivation, health and wellbeing of our forces and can provide a rewarding, transformative experience while promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. Team Forces also supports those who are recovering from wounds or illness to take part in events which help them move beyond their disability, regain confidence and recapture their zest for life.
Some of the amazing individuals Team Forces has supported recently include:
Polar Preet – Army Officer who made history in 2021 by becoming the third fastest woman and first woman of colour to ski to the South Pole, solo and unsupported. In 2023 she went on to break both the longest solo unsupported one-way polar ski journey for a woman and also the longest solo unsupported one-way polar ski journey overall.
Hari Budha Magar – ex-Gurkha who in 2023 became the first ever double above the knee amputee to climb Mt Everest! Team Forces is currently supporting him as he attempts to climb the seven highest peaks on each continent. He has already ticked four off the list – an amazing achievement.
Darren Edwards – ex Reservist and disabled explorer funded by Team Forces who has completed some amazing expeditions such as kayaking from Lands End to John O’ Groats, sit-skiing to the South Pole and to become the first person with a disability to complete the World Marathon Challenge (7 Marathons in 7 days across 7 continents).
Zara Lachlan – in October this year Team Forces is supporting a young and aspiring technical officer in the Army to hopefully become the first woman and youngest person ever to row a gruelling 3,600 nautical miles solo and unsupported from mainland Europe to mainland South America.
Jonny Huntington – an elite para-athlete and explorer, a former British Army Officer and ultra-distance runner. He is planning an expedition to become the first ever disabled person to reach the South Pole solo, unsupported and unassisted.
